Día de Muertos A sunny Sunday of remembrance

Thank you to all who participated in this year’s Día de Muertos Procession and Community Altar. It was a beautiful afternoon to gather, celebrate the lives of our difuntos, and remember that love lives on through tradition.

We began at Plaza del Sol with an ancestral ceremony by Cuacualco, whose guidance led the procession to our next ofrenda at the MexicantownCDC Galería. As we walked together, we reflected on our ancestors—their stories, sacrifices, and legacies—carried forward by families, friends, and neighbors.

From plaza to altar: community in motion

The procession concluded at the MexicantownCDC Mercado, where participants placed flowers and photos of their loved ones on the Community Altar. Our closing ceremony featured breathtaking Aztec dances and a friendly convivencia with Pan de Muerto and Mexican hot chocolate—a sweet reminder that remembrance can be both solemn and full of joy.

Honoring Sixto Rodriguez and Mexican artistry

This year’s Altar was dedicated to the remarkable Sixto Rodriguez—a beloved singer from Southwest Detroit—and to other talented Mexican artists. The altar was designed by artist @eltonmonroy, crafted with the assistance of University of Michigan LEAPS students, and lovingly decorated by a MexicantownCDC staff member. Muchísimas gracias to everyone who helped us bring it to life just in time.

Visit the Community Altar

The Community Altar will be on display through Wednesday, November 12, and can be viewed Tuesday–Friday, 1–5 PM.

Gracias, comunidad

To our dancers, musicians, ceremony leaders, artists, students, volunteers, staff, vendors, families, and neighbors—gracias. Your presence and energy make this tradition a living, breathing part of Southwest Detroit.
